Gambling sites shift tactics after AI content abuse draws Google scrutiny
25 September 2026
The "parasite SEO" trend of acquiring established sites for links and traffic has drawn scrutiny from both search engines and the industry. Some are shifting their approach from purely search-first traffic tactics to multi-channel branding and journalism.
Clickout Media, operator of Esports Insider, is a case study in the perils of this "parasite SEO" strategy.
The company acquired a string of video game and sports sites, replacing the human-authored content with AI-generated gambling journalism. They added links to offshore gambling affiliates and walked away once sites were penalized or removed from the search index.
"Google may well have removed [Esports Insider] from its search index as part of a crackdown on 'parasitic' SEO tactics," the Press Gazette reports.
The industry is at a crossroads. Search algorithms, regulation, and growing user distrust are making purely transactional, keyword-focused content strategies less reliable.
"Thin, value-free content is now harder to sustain," says Yogonet, "as algorithms prioritize informational over transactional content, users get pickier, and regulators more stringent."
Gambling publishers are instead diversifying to differentiate, with their own branded content, direct brand searches, and inroads on search and social.
"This is a shift in content strategy," Yogonet operator Paul Skinner said. "It's less about ranking individual pages and more about credibility, reputation, and an audience."
The changing search landscape is forcing gambling publishers to play in a wider world.
1. **SEO**: Focusing on topic clusters, audience-keyword targeting, and long-term SERP visibility.
More on this is available via information about casino bonuses.
2. **Digital PR**: Earning editorial links and placements as a way to build authority and allure.
3. **Affiliate/referral traffic**: Attracting leverageable, commissionable audiences through influencer partners and sign-up incentives.
4. **Paid media**: Buying substantial search, social, and display inventory alongside branded content and offers.
5. **Retention**: Draining more first-time users into recurrent players and customers.
"The goal is to build a defensible, adjoining audience from a multiplier of customer acquisition channels," says digital marketing expert Mark von Scheidt.
Ultimately, publishers are moving away from treating media as a search loophole to a long-term audience asset. Without a massive investment in authority, expertise, or original content, arbitraging search opportunity alone isn't a sustainable play.
"We're entering a world where rankings and places in the index are less assured," says industry analyst Jamie Singleton. "Diversification and long-term audience value is the antidote to that uncertainty."
